Christian Formation

It is a Lifelong Process!

What is Christian Formation?

At Davis Community Church, we are intentional in speaking of Christian Formation rather than Christian Education in order to remind us that a life of discipleship will transform the entirety of our lives. Christian formation and growth is a life-long process that begins with partnership with God and each other. Study is one of the basic activities that nourishes, stretches, and deepens our faith. In addition to the traditional educational ministries of the church, DCC’s ministry of Christian Formation encourages us to grow in faith by:

  •  Worshipping regularly with the whole Christian family
  • Deepening our personal relationship with God through our prayer life and through opportunities for spiritual direction, either individually or in small groups
  • Engaging in service and fellowship with our fellow Christians as a way to reinforce what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ

Children in Worship at DCC

The first and most important opportunity is the opportunity to worship God. At DCC, we emphasize the experience of the whole family to worship God together. Our youngest children are encouraged to worship with us and participate in Children's Chapel.

  • A nursery school for children up to 2 is available from 8:15 to 12:45 every Sunday. A playroom for children 3 to 4 years old is also available from 8:15 to 12:45.
  • Children's Chapel for Children (K – Grade 3) is offered during the sermon at the 8:30 and 11:00 AM services in the Sanctuary Classroom.
  • Children in grade 4 and older are encouraged to stay for worship.

Sunday School, Sundays at 9:45 AM

Christian Formation for Children (Preschool- Grade 6)

Sunday School for children is from 9:45 to 10:45 during the regular worship year (September to June). Children are welcome to join a class at any time during the year. Our Sunday School time begins with a time of singing, worship, and fellowship for our children. Our Sunday School curriculum follows Seasons of the Spirit, and ecumenical program based on the revised common lectionary. All grades study the same Bible stories. These are often the same texts used in our worship services. It is our hope to foster a greater connection between Sunday School and worship and to facilitate dialog with families at home.

Christian Formation for Youth (grades 7-12)

7th and 8th Graders: This fall classes will be using the Season of Spirit curriculum. This is an ecumenical, lectionary based curriculum that is based on the same texts as our worship services. We have a dynamic team of teachers and some fabulous teenagers!

Confirmation Class: We will be offering a Confirmation Class next year for any youth in 9th grade or above. At the end of the class, we off our youth the opportunity to choose DCC as their church home. It is our hope that our youth begin to progress to an “owned” faith.

High School: Our High School class is planning their own summer mission trip! And as a part of that planning, they are studying Bible stories to discover what it means to be “called” to serve and to love our neighbors.

All Junior and Senior High School aged youth are invited to participate in our youth ministry programs. For more information, please see our youth web site or contact the church office at 530-753-2894.

Adult Formation

We offer a variety of faith formation opportunities for adults on Sunday mornings at 9:45. These classes may include a Lectionary Bible Study, a book study, an art or spiritual practice experience, as well as an exploration of issues related to peace and justice. Topics change during the year and are announced in the Sunday bulletin, the Courier newsletter (electronic and print), in email updates, and on the weekend update web page. We encourage all adults to participate in these offerings as a vital part of their spiritual growth. For more information, please contact Reverend Tricia Hill or the church office at 530-753-2894.

Year-Round Small Groups and Bible Studies

We offer a variety of small group experiences to foster deeper relationships and to explore topics in greater depth than an hour on Sunday morning would allow. Here are our offerings for the year 2007-2008. These groups may meet weekly, or twice a month for 1 to 2 hours. Several groups are offered on a 'drop-in' basis. Small groups may focus on a specific book, the weekly lectionary, particular scriptures, or a variety of texts for spiritual reflection and deepening. For more information, please contact Patricia Hill or the church office at 530-753-2894.

Monday Bible Study: This Bible study group meets every Monday at noon in the Church Library. Members gather each week to read and discuss scripture. Newcomers are always welcome. For more information, please contact Jerry Ito or the church office at 530-753-2894.

Presbyterian Women Bible Study: For more information, please see "Presbyterian Women" on the fellowship web page or call the church office at 530-753-2894.

Gospel of Mark for Older Adults: We will walk together through the Psalms, noticing where God’s voice is strong in scripture and our individual stories as older adults find real connections. Offered on the first and third Wednesday (3:00 to 4:30 PM) at the University Retirement Community.
